Management Team

With almost 200 years of collective experience in managing hundreds of hospitals, the Signature leadership team's breadth of operational expertise spans oth small and large hospitals, allowing the company to truly meet the unique needs of the communities they serve.
Charles R. Miller, President and Chief Executive Officer
With over 40 years of health care management experience, Miller has served as President of two publicly-held hospital systems and been personally responsible for overseeing the operations of more than 200 hospitals in both the not-for-profit and investor-owned sectors. He was involved in founding five health care companies, four of which became publicly-held, helped raise over $1 billion of capital and oversaw the recruitment of over 200 physicians.
Steven Peterson, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
With 18 years of healthcare and banking experience, Peterson's experience includes accounting, finance, payroll, IT Systems, budgeting and reporting, cash management, benefit plan design and administration, wage and salary administration, and employee relations and human resources. Prior to his CFO role, Peterson served as Signature's Vice President and Corporate Controller.
James "Jay" Hoffman, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer
A 25-year veteran of the healthcare industry, Hoffman served as Vice President of Acquisitions and Development for HCA. He served as a general partner with three venture capital funds with direct oversight of healthcare investments, including three that became public companies. Hoffman is experienced in joint venture and partnership structures with physicians and other providers.
David S. Spencer, Senior Vice President of Operations Development
Focused on Signature's proprietary quality software product, Signature Insights, as well as application of Lean Thinking in hospital operations, Spencer brings more than 40 years of experience in healthcare, organizational leadership and technology to the company. Prior to Signature, Spencer served as World-Wide Business Manager for Healthcare Business Solutions at Eastman Kodak Co. He also founded and led two healthcare information and educational services companies. Spencer began his career in the hospital sector, where he spent 16 years and served as CEO of an organization that managed 139 hospitals in 29 states.
Ronald L. Watson, Senior Vice President of Operations Finance
Watson brings two decades of experience in hospital financial management, including business office management, materials management, information systems, reimbursement, productivity systems, decision support, and budgeting and reporting.
Mary Ann Smokler, Vice President Medical Staff and Market Development
Smokler has an extensive portfolio that encompasses a 15-year career in healthcare marketing, medical staff relations, and physician recruiting. Smokler has had success in recruiting physicians to smaller markets and rural areas, in addition to suburban areas and cities. She recruited more than 280 physicians for a NYSE hospital company.
Carmelo Abaoag, Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Abaoag brings nearly 20 years of experience in maintaining and managing information systems departments for several companies such as CalOPTIMA, Clarent Hospital Corporation and Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. He has been responsible for the development and implementation of various financial and clinical applications, as well as coordinating the application of information technology and providing strategic planning services.
Paul Strom, Vice President of Managed Care
Strom has 30 years of healthcare financial and operations experience in both private and public healthcare companies. His experience includes key managed care positions nationally for short-term acute adn long-term acute care facilities. Prior to working in the managed care roles, he worked as a healthcare management systems consultant and as COO of several hospital facilities.

James E. Dalton, Chairman
Four decades of healthcare management experience, including service as Hospital CEO. Past experience as senior corporate executive with three national investor-owned companies. Founding CEO of Quorum Healthcare.
David L. Steffy
Formerly Executive Director, Ohio State University Hospitals. Co-founder of numerous hospital and health care companies that became national systems, including Republic Health Corporation, Community Health Systems, Province Health Systems, Odyssey Health and SemperCare.
Robert M. Lefton
President and CEO of Odyssey Healthcare, the nation's largest publicly held operator of hospice care. Former President of Horizon Health Corporation. Co-founder and CEO of SemperCare, a leading long term acute care hospital corporation later merged into Select Medical.
Charles R. Miller
Over forty years of healthcare experience in not for profit and investor-owned sectors. Former Hospital CEO and corporate executive with Hospital Affiliates. Co-founded and served as President of Republic Health Corporation and Champion Healthcare Corporation. Founding investor and director of Community Health Systems and United Dental of Texas.
Adrian M. Jones
Managing Director of Goldman, Sachs & Co. Joined Goldman, Sachs & Co. in 1994 in the Investment Banking Division. Moved to its Merchant Banking Division in 1998. Currently serves on the boards of directors of Burger King Corporation, Autocam Corporation, Education Management Corporation and Healthmarkets, Inc. B.A. from University College Galway, M.A. in Economics from University College Dublin and M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
